History of the Celebration

In 1968, a group of Latinos met to discuss the difficulties associated with their lives in their new country. Two common concerns arose: a desperate need to feel more at home and a strong desire for the mutual respect and understanding of their new friends and neighbors. After much discussion, a celebration modeled after the “fiestas patronales” (patron saints festival) of Puerto Rico was born, and many communites throughout New York State embraced the celebration. The Ithaca Latino Community and friends are delighted to continue an old tradition in a new home, the Finger Lakes Region, and share the rich history of this festival.
